THE LION AND THE GOAT

The doorbell rang for the second time, waking Keith up.

“Brijesh!” He shouted, digging his head further underneath the pillow.

The doorbell rang again.

“Brijesh! Please!” He shouted once more, hoping that his friend would open the door.

But Brijesh wasn’t home. He had left for his hometown last night. Keith recollected this only when the bell rang for the fourth time. He dragged himself out of bed and looked around for his t-shirt. But when the bell rang once again, he dropped the idea and hurried toward the door, topless.

Keith had begun with football six months back. His flat stomach and lean muscles were clear indications of all the hard work that he had put in. His fitness had seen tremendous improvements. It was a good sign. But unfortunately, he didn’t see it that way. He had started football late in life. So, he felt he had to show drastic improvements if he was to succeed in his plans. But he didn’t see such improvements. With every passing day, his mind was accepting the fact that he was wasting his time in pursuit of an impossible dream. He had skipped his first practice session yesterday. And he had no plans to attend even today’s afternoon session. To avoid the guilt, he had been calling it a break. But deep down, he knew the truth. He was about to call it a day. Just the thought of giving up on his dream made him sad. But at the same time, he didn’t know what else he could have done.

Keith reached the door and looked out through the peephole. He saw a man standing outside. He had something in his hands — a parcel of some sort. After some more peeping, Keith concluded that the object wasn’t dangerous. When he opened the door, he saw that the man was holding a gift-wrapped parcel. Before he could say anything, the man handed him the parcel along with a pen and paper.

“Please sign here, sir,” the man said, pointing to a section of the paper. Keith scanned it for his name and address. He was surprised to find them — the gift was indeed meant for him.

Is it an early birthday gift?

But who could have sent it? Keith thought as he signed the paper. When he was done, the delivery man took off, leaving a parcel in his hand and surprise on his face.

Is it Maya? No.

No. It can’t be her.

Don’t you remember seeing her the other day?

Keith recollected the scenes from last week. And soon, the kiss began to replay on the screen of his mind. He steered his mind clear of those thoughts and began to unwrap the parcel. It took a few seconds. When he was done, he had a brand new book in his hands.

The cover of the book shined as if it had just slid down the printing machine. Keith’s eyes gleamed as he read the text on the cover:
